Congratulations to Axtell ISD on reaching Stage 3 in the Framework!
Axtell ISD is one of Modern Teacher's smallest partner districts with 2 schools, 854 students, and ~60 instructional staff. Axtell, Texas is located 15 minutes East of Waco, a town best known as the home of Baylor University and the home of Chip and Joanna Gaines, HGTV stars of the show Fixer Upper.
Axtell began their journey with a score of 1.2 on the Digital Convergence scale with Modern Curriculum taking the lead. Axtell's Digital Convergence Strategy Officer, Lisette Casey, had her first day onsite in June of 2016. Over the course of the last 10 months, Lisette met with Axtell leadership onsite seven times and held several virtual check-ins. The leadership team usually had "homework" in between strategy days as well. They will meet next in April with an additional eight staff members joining the Leadership Team to begin to tackle additional Success Indicators in Modern Curriculum. Axtell's progress across all drivers is described below.
Axtell has effectively communicated several "Messages from the Top," and engaged all stakeholders to be a part of the Digital Transformation process through culture conversations and constructing a vision of Modern Learning. Their brand, Meeting challenges in Modern Classrooms is known by all stakeholders.
Axtell's newly-developed Instructional Model defines the instructional practices expected to be put into place in each and every classroom through the process of Digital Convergence. The Instructional Model provides entry points in lesson design for all stakeholders and encourages growth in learning and best practices.
Axtell created a blended unit plan to emphasize the needed flexibility in redesigning traditional lessons to meet the needs of modern learners through blended learning and personalization. Using their Instructional Model as a guide, Axtell identified unit essential elements regardless of grade level or content area.
Axtell has defined their Digital Ecosystem purpose and vision, conducted an inventory of all digital tools and content and organized these into a visual that graphically communicates the primary systems and subsystems to all users. This visual is increasing access and use of their digital content among all stakeholders.
After creating a plan for professional growth, Axtell identified coaches of Digital Convergence and launched professional learning related to their Instructional Model and vision of the modern learning environment to all teachers.
When asked by Axtell's Superintendent how they can best continue to grow after this huge accomplishment, Axtell's Strategy Officer emphasized the importance of the message from the top in creating a resonant culture of progress. Congratulations to Axtell for their hard work and achievement in the Framework!
